Drag queens have gone mainstream. What was once a small event in a gay neighborhood has transformed into an annual mass-media spectacle. The High Heel Race is the signature event of the Dupont Circle neighborhood, and now attracts people from all over the city. Here are a few of the photos from the event:

The event is put together by Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets, with help from Cobalt and JR’s.

The police department spent way too money on the event. The officers were friendly, but I was amazed to see about a hundred cops assigned to the event. And as usual, they re-opened the street to traffic way too early. Since few folks manage to get front-row viewing spots, the most fun is after the race when everyone can mingle on the street. It should stay open longer.
